Dark Light

I had the long weekend Monday off today and we went for our first visit to a zoo. Beanie was talking on the speakerphone to yeh-yeh and asked, “Do you want to go to the zoo?” It was the first time he pronounced “zoo” and of course didn’t really know what a zoo was. Our babysitter from New Zealand visited the Innisfail zoo and passed it on to us as an activity that might be fun, so we made an afternoon of it.

The kids had a really good nap on the way down there. The parents even got a chance to have a DQ Blizzard and milkshake without having them wake up! Both of them, especially Sierra, have their best naps in the car.

The zoo itself had some exotic animals that I wouldn’t have expected for a such a small operation including lions and tigers. Everett’s favorite book presently is The Lion King for some reason. (See the previous post, he’s reading the Lion King). I personally hate reading the book, because there’s a lot of text for Everett’s age, and the characters are difficult to keep track of (baby Simba looks different from little Simba from adult Simba, who looks like Mufasa, Simba’s dad). Anyways, Everett like it and keeps asking who each of the characters are, especially Simba and Nala, and knows that Scar and the hyenas are dodgy. Back to the zoo – they had a female and male lion whom Everett recognized and we named them Simba and Nala.

Everett didn’t mind the snake too much, once he saw me pet it. “He’s sticking his tongue out!” he recalled when we reviewed his day at bed time.

There was a bear presentation where we got to see some interpreters show us some training they’ve done with black bears and a baby grizzly. Of course, the kids were too small to watch and didn’t last through the first 10 minutes.

Don’t discount Sierra’s observational skills. She’s pretty busting out the index fingie and pointing at all sorts of stuff. Usually it is to mommy, because she wants to be held. But she was out point at the deer today and even the black bear and some birds when we walked by!
