Dark Light

We went out to get a birthday present for the Venu boys today after supper. It was a late outing, but the kids did pretty well. Everett was really good, especially since the Paw Patrol had come out with another set of toys including the Sub and a transforming Sky vehicle, Everett’s current favorite pup. I told him that he could look at it, but then he’d have to put it back. And without tantrum or crying, there was a little protest, he put the toys back.

It would be so easy to just buy the darn toy and I would savor that moment of joy just as much as Everett would love receiving the toy. Everett asks, “Can we take it home mum?” or “Can we buy it?” We’d look at the price tag with him. Of course he can’t read numbers of more than a single digit right now, so we’d tell him it’s expensive. “This one’s not expensive,” he’d tell me as he point to another Paw Patrol toy.

But we have so much plastic junk as it is, and in past parenting experience, there has been such an accumulation of toys that I can see whatever we get him will become discarded and lost in his toy room. The satisfaction would be fleeting for me, and for Everett short lived. And then there’s setting the precedent, and having a spoiled Bean.

Sierra was having a blast at the toy store too, much like Everett was at her age. She grabbed the cart, loaded it with a couple of balls and cruised around the store. Every which way she looked, there was something else interesting!
