Dark Light

I got Family Day weekend off so we went down to Calgary to celebrate CNY. The real CNY was actually 5 days prior, but I was in the midst of probably the busiest nephrology week that I could recall. We had a nice visit with Doris, Kelvin and Connor at their place. Luckily Connor got up from his nap to spend some time with Everett playing. Everett has surpassed Connor in height, and while Everett is walking pretty well, Connor is going through the wobbly-wobbly phase. Connor might get some pressure to start walking but it really doesn’t matter because everyone eventually walks when he or she is ready. Connor was a bit shy, but they seemed like they’d be good buds, hanging out with each other, and starting to learn to share.

Everett got into a serious tug-o-war with Maebyn at her 2nd birthday over a pack of Twizzlers. Everett doesn’t know what’s going on of course, but Maebyn wanted what Everett had in his hands and Everett would not let go. He let out his famous shrieking screams (the kind that scares away older kids and larger animals). Being a parent I wonder if Everett is going to get bullied and what to teach him about behaving around other children, or (worse?) what if he were to do the bullying. It’s not black and white of course, and I think every kid has both sides to their character, it’s just which one comes out more.

Life is not fair. Everett has to not only learn that fact, but understand how to behave in an unfair society so that he can be successful even if the odds are against him. So far, he’s a lucky Bean, and probably couldn’t be raised in a more supportive environment, but because of this we’ll have to make extra efforts to make sure he doesn’t grow up feeling entitled and spoiled.
